Highly recommended to visit.
As long as dry weather (after rain, just 2 days to dry out the roads), no problem to drive through for 13 miles off road ; . Have a joyful visit

What a beautiful and serene place. No priests or nuns, just monks, working on the grounds, knitting, and answering questions. Lots of beautiful art, and a wonderful chapel with a majestic mountain background. We were blessed with finding beautiful images in the mountain, like they had been chiseled. Stay awhile and enjoy the peaceful experience.
Google maps said 17 miles, 45 minutes. It was right... Long gravel, sometimes washboard road. Lovely cathedral, gift shop, priests, monks. Appeared to be small amount of silent retreat housing available.
Beautiful monastery in a beautiful setting! We just visited for the day but, my understanding is that you can stay there and participate (or not, if you don't want to) with the monk's activities. The road from hwy 84 is around 13 miles, unpaved and rough in some places, but nothing that a stock vehicle cannot do. Great place to go and visit, while enjoying the scenery!
Worth the drive on the one lane dirt road. After driving 13 miles, which took about 45 minutes. I was happy that I didn't give up at mile marker 5 and turn around. There's a peaceful atmosphere that is worth the drive.
The 13 miles of driving narrow dirt roads with loads of curves through the mountains is well worth it. You can not be in a rush for this trip and will take a minimum of 2 hours. But it is well worth it for the beauty and peaceful atmosphere at the monastery and on the drive
Beautiful and tranquil monastery, still with active monks.
Great place for contemplations.
Public restrooms and free wifi available.
Years ago, I arrived here completely unannounced with no reservations and after barely surviving the trecherous drive from the main road, I was weary. But from the moment I finally drove up and found this gem in a literal desert, I was welcomed with open arms.
The rocky cliffs that stetch up from the modern adobe ediface of the chapel, seemed to fill the valley with the whispering spirits of the lifelong dwellers who used to call this place home.
The first night was downright comical seeing as there weren't any lights in the guest rooms, only personal kerosene lamps located down the hall. The guy who checked me in warned me of this, but I didn't get the importance of it until after the sun went down, of course. lol.
This was a great escape from the real world, and to get to know like-minded artists, one of whom was a monk calling the monastery home!
God bless these guys and their spiritual, solitary lives, and thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
